Judy, a fraternal twin to her brother, Jerry Lewis Bowles. They were born on October 31, 1946, in Hawthorne, California to Max Maurice & Lavera Vera Grace (Hubel). She and Jerry had an older brother, Jimmy (Class of 1961) and her fraternal twin brother, Jerry. In her early years, she was an outgoing and bubbly person with a streak of shyness.

Her parents divorced and her mom remarried in late 1961. Her parents were rather strict to a certain point. Her brothers Jimmy and Jerry played baseball and played on a team called the Pirates with Dennis Wilson, the same age as Jerry and Judy. In 1961, the manager had a coach helping him by the name of Brian Wilson. Not only did Jimmy play baseball well, but he was a great surfing and taught Brian how to surf. During one of the games, Brian's eye caught onto Jimmy's little sister, Judy, and that moment captured Brian's heart and they became inseparable. Judy along with a few friends and her brothers would hang out at the Wilson&apos:s garage, listening to the boys play. The Wilson's and Bowles lived a few blocks apart, the Wilson's on 119th, and the Bowles on 115th spent quite a bit of time together. This was at the beginning of the Beach Boys success with their song Surfin.

During one of their times hanging out, Brian asked Jimmy to give him a list of all the great surfing spots and so he did, not thinking anything about what Brian was going to do with it. Brian wrote Surfing USA as a result. Brian's love for Judy was ever growing and he wrote the song, Judy but it wasn't released for another 20 years. However, another song that was released that he wrote specifically about Judy was Surfer Girl. Judy gave her input into the songs Brian wrote.

In 1963 when Judy was 16, Brian proposed to her and she anxiously accepted. Not one for the limelight and the glitter, Judy shyed away from it and stayed home as Brian was gaining more success with the Beach Boys. especially with Surfin USA and Surfer Girl, topping the charts. Both of their parents were not open to having the other in the house even though they decided to marry before she graduated. He often made the comment, Wouldn't It Be Nice..., which he wrong the song about their relationship and wish they/she were older. Unfortunately, as you will read in the exert below entitled, Do You Love Me, Do You Surfer Girl?, from the book by Jim Murphy, Becoming the BEACH BOYS 1961-1963, they grew apart due to Brian working away at the studios and mingling with other musicians, and his eye caught another young girl by the name of Marilyn, whose family openly accepted him, something he was longing for due to the family strife growing up.

She and Jerry graduated from Lennox High School in 1964, and only saw Brian occasionally.

Judy loved to read, write, art, and of course, spend time at THE BEACH! Her love and proficiency as a writer resulted in having a screenplay picked up by Columbia Pictures in the 80's that was made into a TV movie.

As you can see from her entries here on the LennoxLancerHome webpage, that she was modest, and did not talk herself up aobut her many accomplishments during her life.

Michelle Carroll, Judy's daughter, provides some person stories about her mom that is after the picture below of the two of them at Disney World.

Judy and Michelle

Michelle's Story of her Mom

My mom did have an interesting life. She dated Brian when she was fairly young. He was coaching her brother's baseball team and she was there rooting for them. They really liked each other and would see each other every day. Brian wasn't getting along with his dad, Murray. Murray was an emotional abuser and I believe caused a lot of Brian's emotional problems. My mom told me so many stories about how bad Brian's dad was. They lived 2 blocks away from each other. My mom's brothers did befriend Brian and his brother Dennis.

My mom's brother's, Jim and Jerry, taught them to surf and just generally hang out, when Murray would let them out of the house. While this was happening my mom and Brian got engaged. She said the ring was just gorgeous.

The Beach Boys were just starting out in their garage and my mom would go hang out, this would've been around '61. They had their first song, Surfin, trying to come out on the radio stations and one day there was a contest between 2 songs, Surfin was one of them, and for the life of me I can't remember the other one. My mom and her family sat at the kitchen table and dialed the radio station for 2 hours voting for Surfin. The song won and the DJ played it constantly for weeks. My grandmother kept the phone bill because the station was long distance, lol. so funny.

Another time my mom and Brian were at a family function with other couples. At that time they didn't really have anywhere to hang out by themselves. My grandma wasn't the nicest person and Murray wouldn't let them in the house, only the garage. So when another couple was showing affection and giving back rubs, my mom said she and Brian had tears in their eyes, because they could never be alone somewhere, and Brian said, Wouldn't it be nice?. He wrote that song later.

My mom said they were generally happy and he took her to her prom. I lost the picture in the flood. Sadly. The band was now touring a little bit and they were always on the phone together. Brian just wanted a family and was trying to get his own place. My grandma wasn't the warmest person and he didn't feel welcome there. Brian met Marilyn and her family was very loving and welcoming. They had big get together's and would cook for him.

My mom kept the engagement ring and they phased out of each other's lives. Years later my mom went to a concert at the San Diego Stadium. She was on the side of the stage and he saw her and had a stage hand take her backstage. They caught up and sadly that picture was lost too. But he was decked out in a sequined jacket and he was kissing my mom's cheek in the picture.

My mom just had so many stories about the Beach Boys. They were smart, fun boys but kind of sheltered by Murray. My mom's brothers did help them start doing activities and going out more.

My mom worked for the Department of Rehabilitation for the state of California for years and years. She would help people that were disabled and going to rehab. I remember one time she was so excited that a paraplegic man qualified for a van he could drive with his hands. She was such a sweetheart. My mom retired young and came to Florida where I was living. She worked part-time for something to do but we lived by the beach where she loved to go.

My mom was the sweetest person I know. She really enjoyed writing and reading. She had a screenplay picked up by Columbia Pictures in the 80's that got turned into a t.v. movie. She also loved the beach and swimming. She was married twice with only one daughter and no grandkids. But she often talked about her high school years at Lennox High and her fond memories.

She passed away April 29th 2023 in her sleep at home with her 2 dogs and cat. She was so special and sweet. She didn't have a mean bone in her body.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
